Is Sleepmaxxing the Secret to the Best Sleep Ever? Unpacking TikTok’s Trend and Its Hidden Risks

If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok lately, you might have come across the latest sleep trend: sleepmaxxing. As the name implies, sleepmaxxing focuses on optimizing sleep to its fullest potential.

This trend has attracted millions of views. This procedure encourages individuals to adopt intricate bedtime routines aimed at achieving deep, restorative sleep.

The idea goes beyond a standard night routine. It incorporates layers of skincare, relaxation techniques, and specific nighttime supplements designed to improve sleep quality.

Sleepmaxxing fans on TikTok display extensive routines. It includes the “morning shed,” a ritual that involves applying overnight skincare products.

These products include collagen masks, wrinkle patches, under-eye treatments, lip masks, and mouth tape to promote nasal breathing. Some even use jaw straps, hair wraps, and heatless curlers to wake up looking rejuvenated.

For a pre-bedtime drink, users create a “sleepy girl mocktail”. It is a blend of tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, and sparkling water, claiming it aids relaxation and enhances sleep.

While sleepmaxxing can provide benefits, experts warn against going too far. For some, these elaborate routines and supplements can become overwhelming, leading to anxiety about sleep instead of relaxation.

Overly complicated regimens can also result in misinformation, especially when advice is taken directly from social media influencers. It is important to consult sleep specialists or healthcare professionals.

For instance, mouth taping, a popular sleepmaxxing technique, is meant to encourage nose breathing. However, it’s not suitable for everyone, particularly those with sinus issues.

It can hinder breathing and cause discomfort. Likewise, some supplements marketed for sleep, such as melatonin or magnesium, may not work for all users. These supplements can even disrupt natural sleep patterns if misused.

Despite the trend’s popularity, sleep experts stress the importance of a simpler approach.
