As the humanitarian toll in the war-torn enclave continues to rise, an Israeli-backed humanitarian organisation reported that at least 20 Palestinians were killed during an aid distribution operation in Gaza. In the midst of severe food and medicine shortages, the fatal occurrence occurred as desperate residents congregated for necessities.
The already precarious situation on the ground was made worse by a wave of Israeli bombings that occurred across Gaza at the same time as the tragedy. These attacks are said to have killed 41 more Palestinians, including 11 children. Following the fatal aid-site event, footage captured the pandemonium and despair as locals frantically sought shelter.
Working with Israeli coordination, the humanitarian organisation acknowledged that the distribution became deadly as a result of local military activity and public pressure. But contradictory accounts from humanitarian groups and local authorities are casting doubt on the circumstances behind the fatalities.
Humanitarian organisations from around the world have denounced the increasing number of civilian deaths and are urging prompt international action to safeguard relief routes. “This is not acceptable. Even as they seek assistance, civilians are being caught in the crossfire,” a UN spokesperson stated. As the conflict continues, calls for a ceasefire and protected humanitarian zones are growing louder.
