Joe Biden Uses Presidential Power to Pardon Son Hunter

US President Joe Biden issued an official pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, on Sunday. This decision comes after Hunter faced potential sentencing in two criminal cases, despite earlier promises from the president not to intervene in his legal matters.

In a statement, President Biden defended his actions, saying, “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong.”

Legal Background of Hunter Biden’s Cases

Hunter Biden was convicted earlier this year for lying about his drug use while purchasing a firearm, a felony offense. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to charges of tax evasion in a separate case. Despite paying back taxes and penalties, he was still facing potential sentences of up to 17 years for tax evasion and 25 years for the firearm charge.

His legal team argued that these charges were politically motivated, claiming Hunter was prosecuted because of his relationship with the president. A previous plea deal that would have avoided jail time fell apart, leaving Hunter to face more severe legal consequences.

President Biden’s Stance

President Biden had consistently maintained that he would not interfere in his son’s legal troubles. However, in Sunday’s statement, he expressed concerns about the fairness of the judicial process:

“I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” Biden stated. He added, “Raw politics has infected this process, leading to a miscarriage of justice.”

The pardon, a controversial move, has reignited debates about the independence of the US judicial system. Critics argue that it sets a troubling precedent, particularly as President-elect Donald Trump is under scrutiny for similar uses of presidential authority.

Pardons in US History

Presidential pardons for family members or political allies are not unprecedented. For example, Bill Clinton pardoned his half-brother for old drug charges, and Donald Trump pardoned his son-in-law’s father for tax evasion. In these cases, however, the individuals had already served their sentences.

During his campaign, Trump even promised to pardon supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, emphasizing the controversial nature of such decisions.

Hunter Biden’s Statement

Following the pardon, Hunter Biden issued a statement acknowledging his past struggles with drug addiction and expressing his commitment to helping others. He said, “I will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”

Political Implications

This pardon has come at a critical time, with President Biden stepping back from the 2024 election race in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris.

The decision to pardon Hunter Biden has added fuel to Republican claims that the president’s family receives preferential treatment. However, it may also shift attention to other ongoing legal battles, including cases against President-elect Trump, which have stalled due to a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.
