Jos Buttler to Consider Captaincy Future Following Champions Trophy Disappointment

England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler conceded he will not rush into determining his leadership prospects after his side’s dismal showing in the Champions Trophy. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who has captained England in both ODIs and T20Is, suggested his role might be reassessed following the team’s poor performance during the tournament.

Commenting following England’s defeat, Buttler publicly questioned his role as a leader, saying, “I need to work out personally—am I part of the problem or part of the solution?” His words have set tongues wagging as to whether he will remain as captain or step down in order for new leadership to lead the team into the future.

Buttler’s captaincy has had highs and lows in the form of England’s T20 World Cup win in 2022 as well as a lackluster 2023 ODI World Cup performance. With England not leaving a strong impression at the Champions Trophy, voices are being raised to change within the cricket fraternity. Experts and past players have made their opinions known on the matter, opining that England can do with a change of direction to become champions in white-ball cricket once again.

As England ponders its upcoming international matches, Buttler’s ruling on his captaincy will be pivotal in determining the way forward for the team. Either he remains to captain or stands down to bring in a successor, England’s cricketing arrangements could be ready for a complete leadership overhaul.
