Police authorities in Nagpur arrested the city president of Minority Democratic Party, Faheem Khan, on suspicion of his alleged involvement in violent clashes witnessed recently in the city. The violence has landed him under charges levelled through a serious charge read in the terms of a First Information Report (FIR) filed in the Ganesh Peth police station.
The FIR not only accuses Khan of masterminding the riots but also states a chilling conspiracy where women are to be raped and molested in the chaos. More than 50 people were already under detention as part of the crackdown by the police after the violence.
Nagpur has been placed under curfew, and security has been beefed up in major areas to avert further chaos. State authorities have promised strict action against all culprits, including those who instigated violence or hatched ghoulish crimes.
This has set off a broad outrage and added to fears of communal tensions and the safety of women during politically charged times.
