Mohanlal’s new crime thriller Thudarum has created history at the box office, officially joining the exclusive ₹2 billion global gross club. This gritty Malayalam-language thriller is now only the third in industry history to reach this milestone, solidifying its status as a modern classic and a pan-India commercial success.
Directed by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon, Thudarum is the gripping tale of a retired police officer drawn back into a world of crime and deceit. With gripping storytelling, high-octane performances, and positive word-of-mouth, the film picked up steam not only in Kerala but in overseas markets such as the UAE, US, and the UK.
Industry insiders attribute the success of the film to Mohanlal’s command performance, snappy direction, and good theatre word supported by strategic overseas distribution. It received a great run in the Gulf countries, Malayalam cinema in which has a growing and loyal body of fans.
Thudarum now joins Pulimurugan and Lucifer as the only other Malayalam films to reach the ₹2 billion mark overseas. The movie continues its theatrical run with repeat audiences and packed houses, demonstrating that regional cinema can do well on the global stage if it has the right mix of content and charm.
