Health officials in Hong Kong and Singapore released new public health advisories after both cities reported a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases, marking the beginning of a new wave. Hospitals in the two cities are also reporting a small increase in admissions, but most of these cases are mild because of mass vaccination. The authorities stressed that older persons, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those with impaired immunity should exercise heightened precautions under this resurgence.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health claimed that the latest wave would be caused by new Omicron sub-variants that would infect faster but seem less severe for vaccinated people. Hong Kong authorities, on the other hand, have re-introduced partial mask reminders in high-density indoor areas and urged people to work from home where feasible.
