On Monday, a new taxi-sharing pilot service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi was launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). This initiative allows passengers to save up to 75% on travel costs.
The service aims to offer a convenient, quick, and affordable transportation option. It will run for six months, with the possibility of expanding to other locations depending on its success.
Passengers can share rides starting from Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai to Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi.
“This initiative is designed to lower travel expenses, especially for those who frequently commute between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Both locations are also well-connected to public transport and parking facilities,” said Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency.
Shakri explained that sharing a taxi would allow passengers to save significantly. “If four passengers share one taxi, they can reduce their travel costs by up to 75%,” he noted.
In a shared ride, each commuter will pay Dh66, compared to the full fare if riding alone. Passengers can pay using their bank cards or Nol cards.
If two riders share the taxi, the fare will be Dh132 each, while three passengers will each pay Dh88.
RTA aims to reduce traffic congestion through this initiative by encouraging shared rides, which also helps the environment by lowering carbon emissions and reducing the use of unlicensed transport services, according to a statement from the authority.
