Oman Broadens Plastic Bag Prohibition: New Stage Aimed at Stores and Bakeries

In an effort to reduce environmental pollution and save marine life, Oman has begun the third phase of its statewide ban on plastic bags. A wider variety of retail businesses, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, bakeries, and gift shops, are included in the most recent phase, which was implemented by the Environment Authority.

The detrimental effects of plastic trash on the environment, particularly its long-term harm to marine ecosystems, have been emphasised by officials. In addition to choking marine life, floating plastic waste destroys aquatic biodiversity, which is why policymakers must act quickly.

Non-biodegradable plastic bags are expressly forbidden in all newly listed areas under the amended legislation. Companies are encouraged to switch to eco-friendly substitutes like cloth or biodegradable bags. The public is being urged by the government to embrace reusable solutions in order to actively support the programme.

Beginning in 2020, Oman’s plastic ban has gradually grown in stages, demonstrating the nation’s dedication to environmental sustainability and supporting international initiatives to reduce plastic pollution.
