Like many others, my journey into wanderlust began with a post-university gap year in Thailand. It was a time of discovery, and Thailand’s vibrant culture, warm people, and breathtaking beauty sparked a lifelong love for travel.
When planning my recent trip to Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, I wondered if it could live up to the memories I held so fondly. Thankfully, Phuket exceeded all expectations, blending stunning natural beauty with modern luxuries.
Phuket offers an incredible mix of serene beaches, bustling markets, and top-notch accommodations. Here’s a look at seven reasons why it deserves a spot on your travel bucket list.
1. Peaceful Beaches
Phuket boasts several quiet and unspoiled beaches. Many of the island’s best stretches of sand, like Rawai Beach with its fishing boats and relaxed vibe, or Bang Tao Beach, known for its long, serene shoreline, are on the west coast. Measuring about 48 km, these beaches provide the perfect escape from busy tourist spots elsewhere in Thailand.
2. Rich Culture and Historic Charm
The colorful streets of Phuket’s Old Town are a must-see. Adorned with flowers, lanterns, and charming balconies, the area is filled with quirky cafes, artisan boutiques, and vintage shops. The Sunday Night Market is a vibrant highlight, where you can sample local snacks like the famous Phuketique burnt butter toast, a treat now available at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi.
3. Incredible Cuisine
Thailand’s cuisine is world-famous, and Phuket offers a unique twist, influenced by Chinese and European traders. From creamy green curries to zesty papaya salads, every meal is a delight.
A highlight of my trip was the Banyan Tree Phuket’s breakfast buffet, showcasing diverse local dishes. For an immersive experience, I attended a cooking class at Benjarong in the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. Twice featured in the Michelin Guide, the restaurant combines breathtaking lagoon views with delicious flavors.
4. Dreamy Island Hopping
A trip to Phuket isn’t complete without exploring the Phi Phi Islands. Famous for their dramatic limestone cliffs and pristine beaches, they’re just an hour’s boat ride from Phuket’s coast. Maya Bay, featured in the movie The Beach, is a highlight, and the snorkeling opportunities are unforgettable.
5. Stunning Sunsets
For a breathtaking view, visit Promthep Cape, a scenic viewpoint perched on a cliff. It’s one of the island’s most photographed spots and offers clear views of the Phi Phi Islands on sunny days. The sunset here is a magical moment you won’t forget.
6. Golfing Paradise
Phuket is home to some of the world’s best golf courses. The Laguna Phuket Golf Club offers stunning mountain views, while the Red Mountain Course features dramatic landscapes and unique red rock formations. A caddy is included in your experience, adding a local touch to your game.
7. Vibrant Nightlife
Phuket’s nightlife caters to all tastes. While the Old Town offers chic and sophisticated bars, Bangla Walking Street at Patong Beach is the heart of the party scene. From nightclubs to vibrant street performances, it’s a sensory overload. End your night with a tuk-tuk ride lit up in disco lights—a quintessential Thai experience.
Where to Stay? Laguna Phuket
This resort complex has everything: six hotels, restaurants, jogging paths, a night market, and even a dog park. The Banyan Tree Phuket, an all pool-villa hotel, epitomizes luxury with private pools, floating breakfasts, and a tranquil spa.
