In a daring move to strengthen the Philippines’ long-term energy security, business tycoon Ricky Razon has taken the lead in a significant energy push as Phase 4 of the Malampaya gas drilling project formally begins. Razon’s Prime Infrastructure Capital is leading the charge in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE), aiming to maximize the country’s dwindling natural gas reserves.
The Malampaya gas field, located off the coast of Palawan, has long been a critical source of power for Luzon, but concerns over depleting output have prompted urgent expansion efforts. The launch of Phase 4 is expected to unlock new reserves and extend the field’s lifespan well into the next.
DOE representatives were upbeat about the project’s prospects. “The Philippines’ energy independence depends on this project. Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla stated, “We hope to sustain supply and reduce reliance on imported fuel with Phase 4.”
Razon, whose company interests include ports, infrastructure, and now energy, stressed the value of independence in a world energy environment that is changing quickly. Additionally, the project is anticipated to boost the local economy and create thousands of employment.
