Lucasfilm has announced officially Star Wars: Starfighter, a new standalone picture within the Star Wars franchise, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy. The movie will be released on May 28, 2027. Taking place roughly five years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Starfighter will launch a new story with all-new characters and locations, breaking away from what has come before.
The news was officially released during the Star Wars Celebration convention in Tokyo, with Gosling coming on stage with Levy to express their passion about the project. Gosling, a fan of the franchise for many years, was thrilled to be a part of the Star Wars universe and be working under Levy’s guidance. Levy, who worked on Deadpool & Wolverine and Stranger Things, pointed out that Starfighter strives to get at the heart of Star Wars but attempt to do so in new directions in the galaxy.
The script for Starfighter is written by Jonathan Tropper, and production will start in the fall of 2025. Although the movie will be centered on new characters, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has indicated that cameo roles by known actors are possible, keeping the film connected to the larger Star Wars universe.
