Sambhal Mosques, Including Jama Masjid, to Be Covered with Tarpaulin During Holi

To provide peaceful celebrations and communal harmony, authorities in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, have made up their minds to cover 10 mosques, including the ancient Jama Masjid, with tarpaulin during Holi celebrations on March 14. The action was taken as the festival falls on the same date as Ramadan’s ‘Jumma’ (Friday prayers’)—a phenomenon that is seen after 60 years.

The measure has been taken to avoid any untoward incident and ensure respect for both religious observances. Local leaders and officials have collaborated in putting in place precautionary measures, making sure that celebratory colors do not impact religious sites.

The authorities have also stationed additional security personnel near important points to avert clashes and facilitate smooth conduct of both Holi and Friday prayers. Peace committees consisting of Hindu and Muslim community leaders have been established to encourage mutual respect and understanding during this time.

Rare alignment of Holi with Islamic Jumma during Ramadan has triggered increased security arrangements in India across several districts, in a move to protect India’s strong tradition of communal harmony.
