Saudi Arabia Plans Ban on Tobacco Sales in Small Shops

Saudi Arabia is set to tighten tobacco regulations with new draft rules proposing a ban on tobacco sales in small grocery stores and shops. The move is part of the kingdom’s broader efforts to curb smoking rates and promote public health.

The proposed regulations also include restrictions on the sale of power drinks, aiming to limit access to products considered harmful to health. Authorities emphasize that these measures align with Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes health awareness and lifestyle improvements.

If implemented, the ban will significantly impact small retailers, who rely on tobacco sales as a source of revenue. However, health experts support the initiative, citing the need to reduce smoking, particularly among young people and first-time users.

As discussions continue, the government is expected to roll out awareness campaigns to educate the public about the health risks of tobacco and energy drinks. Retailers may also face new licensing requirements or alternative business strategies to adapt to the changing regulations.
