Steven Gerrard Part Ways with Saudi Club Al Ettifaq After 18 Months

Steven Gerrard has left Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq by mutual agreement, bringing an end to his 18-month tenure. The former Liverpool captain, who took charge of the club in June 2023, departs after guiding Al Ettifaq to a 12th-place finish in the league, a performance that fell short of expectations.

Despite a good start to his managerial career in Saudi Arabia, where it saw him attracting big-name signings, Gerrard’s time at Al Ettifaq was marred by inconsistency. It meant the underwhelming league performance led to a mutual decision to call for separation. Both parties wished each other in their endeavors going forward.

Another chapter in the managerial career of Gerrard opens with his other departure from Al Ettifaq. He initially began his managerial career with Rangers before moving to Saudi Arabia. Now, his next steps are unclear, but his reputation both as a player and a manager will mean that he will continue to attract attention from the world’s leading clubs and national teams.

The club should look for another head coach that will lead it to a future of success. As Saudi football continues to evolve, the lack of a boss at Al Ettifaq offers an opportunity for managers wishing to make an impact in the Middle East.
