Hundreds of Syrians gathered in central Damascus on Thursday, demanding democracy and women’s rights, just over a week after rebel forces removed President Bashar Al Assad from power. The protests, reported by AFP, took place in the iconic Ummayad Square.
Chanting slogans like “We want a democracy, not a religious state,” the demonstrators also called for unity with phrases such as “Free, civil Syria” and “The Syrian people are one.” Protesters held signs with messages like “No free nation without free women,” underscoring the call for gender equality in Syria’s new political future.
The Fall of Assad and Transitional Leadership
On December 8, a rebel coalition led by Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS) captured Damascus in a rapid offensive. The group, originating from Syria’s Al Qaeda branch and labeled a “terrorist organization” by many Western nations, swept through northwest Syria, taking vast areas from government control.
Despite its controversial background, HTS has sought to reassure Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities by adopting a more moderate stance. The group has also set up a transitional government to lead the country until March 1.
Women’s Role in Syria’s Future
Majida Mudarres, a 50-year-old retired civil servant, highlighted the essential role of women in rebuilding Syria. “Both women and men must work together to build a new Syria,” she told AFP. “Women have a big role in political life. We will not tolerate actions against women’s rights, and the era of staying silent is over.”
For decades, the Assad family suppressed dissent, ruling Syria with an iron grip. But this new wave of activism shows a determination to move towards a democratic and inclusive society.
A New Hope Amid Challenges
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed cautious optimism about Syria’s future. “The Middle East is engulfed by many fires, but today, there is a flame of hope in Syria. That flame must not be extinguished,” he stated.
Guterres acknowledged the challenges ahead but urged the global community to support Syria’s journey toward peace and democracy.
