Syria’s new leadership announced on Thursday that it had freed Travis Timmerman, an American citizen. The new government also stated its willingness to work with Washington to locate other Americans who went missing during the rule of former president Bashar al-Assad.
“The American citizen Travis Timmerman has been released and is now safe,” the department of political affairs shared in a statement on Telegram. “We are ready to directly cooperate with the US administration to search for American citizens who disappeared under the former Assad regime.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that efforts were underway to bring Timmerman back to the United States. Speaking during his visit to Jordan, where he discussed Syria’s situation after Assad’s removal, Blinken said, “We’re working to bring him home.” However, he added, “I can’t share any details about what will happen next.”
