Authorities in Tamil Nadu have declared a holiday for schools and colleges across nine districts, including Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, and Trichy, due to heavy rainfall. This decision comes as the region prepares for a potential cyclonic storm developing in the Bay of Bengal.
In addition to the districts mentioned, schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ariyalur, Sivagangai, and Pudukottai will also be closed. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for widespread heavy rains throughout the day, raising concerns about flooding and disruptions in various areas of the state.
Moreover, several universities and educational institutions, including Madras University, Karaikudi Alagappa University, and Bharathidasan University, have opted to postpone their semester exams that were scheduled for today. New dates for these exams will be announced once the weather conditions improve.
The IMD’s forecasts of heavy rainfall and the potential formation of a cyclonic storm have led state authorities to implement precautionary measures to ensure public safety. Emergency response teams are on standby, and residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
