A Philippine tourist had a frightening experience after confusing a live crocodile with a park statue during a visit to a mangrove eco-park. This happened when the man tried to take a selfie next to the apparently motionless reptile without realizing the peril he was about to encounter at close range.
As he was taking the picture, the crocodile made a sudden attack and mauled him, causing serious wounds. Witnesses reported that the tourist shrieked in shock as the reptile bit down on his arm and leg. Park rangers immediately came to his rescue to drag him to safety, but the damage had already been inflicted.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for several deep bites and wounds that needed more than 50 stitches. He is currently under observation but is said to be in stable condition. The park has since released a statement requesting people to stay vigilant and observe animal boundaries.
Officials are currently reassessing safety protocols at the park to avoid future repeats. Though enclosures with crocodiles were signposted, officials agreed there was a need for more obvious signage and additional staff supervision. This chilling experience is a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature — and the perils of a selfie disaster.
