According to former US President Donald Trump, the US is not currently doing direct discussions with Tehran and is not making Iran “anything.” His comments followed Iran’s declaration that it would not entertain a diplomatic approach unless Washington promised to stop more military attacks.
Trump’s comments, made during a press briefing, appear to dismiss growing speculation that back-channel negotiations might be underway to de-escalate rising tensions following Iran’s recent missile strike on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Trump declared that the US would act clearly and forcefully in its interests, adding, “There are no talks, and we’re not giving Iran anything.”
In the meantime, Iran’s leadership has maintained that talks can only take place if the US promises to stop its hostility and remove the current sanctions. Even as foreign parties strive for diplomatic options to prevent a wider confrontation, the rhetorical exchange shows the region’s continued tension.
