Washington Commanders’ name change back to Redskins is tied to Trump’s stadium deal

Trump links the stadium deal to his desire to resurrect the “Redskins”.
By threatening to postpone a new stadium agreement for the Washington Commanders until the NFL team returns to its previous moniker, the Redskins, former US President Donald Trump has ignited new controversy. During his rally speech, Trump urged the Cleveland Guardians to “Make Indians Great Again” and return to their Indian heritage.

Support and Criticism After Controversial Statements
The remarks have rekindled the long-running controversy around Native American team names. Critics referred to Trump’s action as politically opportunistic and racially insulting, while some fans applauded it as a gesture of traditionalism.

Owners of Teams Not likely to budge
Reversing the name change was rejected by sources close to the Commanders’ ownership, who cited years of branding efforts and public pressure. Despite Trump’s claims, the franchise, which formally retired the Redskins name in 2020, has no intention of resurrecting the contentious moniker.

The Rise of Culture War Rhetoric and Political Tensions
Trump’s comments come amid his 2024 campaign trail efforts, where he continues to appeal to conservative voters by invoking culture war issues. As debates about representation, sports, and politics intensify, the stadium deal — and the teams’ names — remain in the national spotlight.
