UAE Cracks Down on Price Violations to Shield Consumers from Overcharging

Following more than 3,500 infractions in recent months, the UAE has stepped up efforts to defend consumer rights by enforcing stricter penalties against merchants who disregard price regulations. The Ministry of Economy announced that it had also addressed nearly 2,000 consumer complaints and initiated 115 product recalls as part of its sweeping consumer protection campaign.

The violations spanned issues such as unjustified price hikes, misleading discounts, and failure to clearly display prices. These findings emerged from extensive inspections across retail outlets, e-commerce platforms, and service providers in all seven emirates.

The Ministry reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for unethical pricing practices and underlined that protecting consumers is a national priority. Retailers who are found guilty may be subject to severe sanctions, such as fines and even licence suspension.

In addition to monitoring, the Ministry has encouraged residents to report irregularities through its consumer protection app and hotline. Officials stressed that transparency, fair pricing, and market stability are key pillars of the UAE’s economic policy, especially as global inflation concerns persist.
