With the arrival of winter, doctors in the UAE are noticing a rise in dandruff cases. About 40% of patients visiting dermatologists are now concerned about dandruff, healthcare professionals say.
Experts highlight that age and gender influence dandruff. While it affects both men and women, it is slightly more common in men.
Why Winter Increases Dandruff
Dr. Malaz Eldirdiry, a specialist dermatologist at Burjeel Medical Center, Al Marina, explained, “Many patients come with dandruff complaints during winter. The cold weather and indoor heating dry out the scalp, causing it to flake.”
She added, “Dry and arid conditions can worsen dandruff. Even high humidity levels in such regions can encourage fungal or bacterial growth on the scalp, which triggers dandruff.”
Common Causes of Dandruff
Dandruff can result from several factors, including:
- Dryness: Lack of moisture due to cold weather or over-shampooing.
- Excessive Oil Production: This can feed fungi like Malassezia.
- Skin Conditions: Issues like eczema or psoriasis.
- Reactions to Hair Products: Some personal care items can irritate the scalp.
- Diet: A poor diet lacking essential nutrients can weaken scalp health.
Dr. Eldirdiry also mentioned that children can develop dandruff due to dry skin, fungal infections, or conditions like cradle cap. However, hormonal changes make dandruff more common in adults.
Widespread Impact of Dandruff
Dandruff affects up to 50% of adults worldwide. It often begins during puberty and can last until middle age, though some people may experience it for life.
Hormonal differences make men slightly more prone to dandruff, says Hadeer Saad Hamed Elsheikh, a certified laser technician at International Modern Hospital, Dubai. “Around 3 to 4 out of 10 patients seek treatment for dandruff, particularly in winter,” she shared.
Stress and Lifestyle Factors
Stress can also trigger dandruff by weakening the immune system, making it harder to manage scalp issues. Hadeer added, “Avoid scratching the scalp, as it worsens irritation and can cause infections. A stress-free lifestyle can help prevent flare-ups.”
Flakes falling onto the face may also block pores and lead to pimples, particularly on the forehead.
Managing and Preventing Dandruff
Healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of identifying the root cause of dandruff. Treatments may include hydrating products, medicated scalp treatments, or dandruff shampoos.
Dr. Shaza Osama Osman Almagrbi, a dermatologist at Zulekha Medical Center Al Khan, explained, “Dandruff shampoos loosen flakes or target fungal growth. Understanding the cause is essential for effective management and prevention.”
Educating patients on regular care and using appropriate products can significantly reduce dandruff and keep symptoms under control.
