In a worrying trend, many people across the Gulf region are turning to weight loss injections as a quick solution to shed unwanted pounds. However, medical experts are cautioning the public about the potential health dangers associated with these treatments, especially after multiple cases of severe complications requiring intensive care.

Growing Concern Over Easy AccessibilityA Balanced Approach is Essential

Dr. Wafa Halmi Ayash, a clinical nutrition consultant and Director of Therapeutic Nutrition at Tadawi Specialised Hospital, shared that nine of her patients were hospitalized in the ICU with pancreatitis after using weight loss injections. She explained, “I have more than 200 patients using these injections of various types. There are also children; both the child and the adult lose weight, but without follow-up with the doctor and a nutritionist, they regain weight.”

Dr. Wafa stressed that while these injections can be effective when used appropriately, the misuse and self-medication without proper medical supervision have resulted in dangerous consequences for many individuals.

Growing Concern Over Easy Accessibility

Experts have also raised concerns about the easy availability of weight loss injections in pharmacies across the UAE, which allows individuals to obtain them without medical prescriptions. This increases the risk of misuse, leading to serious health issues.

Some patients, eager for quick results for events like weddings, experienced severe health complications instead of the desired weight loss outcome.

During the ‘My Health’ conference in Sharjah, Dr. Wafa highlighted that these injections are often used as an alternative to surgeries and have shown success in some cases. However, she emphasized that medical supervision is critical.

“These injections are not a quick fix. Only a doctor is authorized to prescribe them, and if prescribed, there must be follow-up visits,” she warned.

She also mentioned that before using weight loss injections, it is crucial to examine other health aspects, such as thyroid function, and to ensure there is no family history of pancreatic cancer or thyroid disorders.

A Balanced Approach is Essential

While weight loss injections can create a feeling of fullness and help reduce appetite, Dr. Wafa pointed out that they should never replace a balanced diet and regular exercise. “Without a comprehensive approach to weight management, including dietary adjustments and physical activity, individuals may not achieve sustainable results,” she noted.

The rising demand for these injections has prompted experts to call for greater awareness and education on their safe use. Medical professionals are urging the public to consult healthcare providers before starting any weight loss treatment, emphasizing that the potential short-term benefits may not outweigh the long-term health risks.

As the popularity of weight loss injections grows, it is critical for both healthcare providers and patients to engage in informed discussions, ensuring that safety remains a top priority in achieving weight loss goals.
