In the Gulf region, a growing number of people are turning to weight loss injections for quick results. However, medical experts are sounding the alarm about the potential dangers of these treatments, as some patients have ended up in intensive care due to complications.
Dr. Wafa Halmi Ayash, a clinical nutrition consultant and Director of Therapeutic Nutrition at Tadawi Specialized Hospital, revealed that nine of her patients have been admitted to the ICU with pancreatitis linked to weight loss injections. She shared: “I have more than 200 patients using these injections of various types. There are also children; both the child and the adult lose weight, but without follow-up with the doctor and a nutritionist, they regain weight.”
While the injections can be safe when used properly, Dr. Wafa warned that self-medication without professional guidance has led to dangerous outcomes. She added that accessibility to these injections, available in most pharmacies without prescription, further increases the risk of misuse.
Some individuals have sought these injections to lose weight rapidly for social events, only to face serious health issues instead of the desired results. Speaking at the ‘My Health’ conference in Sharjah, Dr. Wafa explained that these injections can be an alternative to surgery but must be used with caution and under medical supervision.
“Only a doctor is authorised to prescribe them, and if prescribed, there must be follow-up visits,” she stressed. She also highlighted the need to check thyroid function and family medical history, as certain conditions like pancreatic cancer or thyroid disorders can make the injections unsafe.
“Weight loss injections can create a feeling of satiety and help reduce weight, but they must be prescribed by qualified healthcare professionals who can monitor their use closely,” Dr. Wafa said. She also emphasized that the injections should not replace a balanced diet and regular exercise, stating, “Without a comprehensive approach to weight management, including dietary adjustments and physical activity, individuals may not achieve sustainable results.”
As the popularity of these injections rises, medical professionals are calling for greater awareness of their safe use. They advise the public to consult healthcare providers before starting such treatments, warning that the short-term benefits may not outweigh the long-term health risks.
The growing demand for weight loss injections underscores the need for informed discussions between healthcare providers and patients to prioritize safety in the pursuit of effective weight loss solutions.
