In a notable shift reflecting evolving recruitment trends, hotel operators in the UAE are increasingly turning to interns from prestigious hospitality schools to meet staffing demands during the busy peak season. Moving away from the short-term freelance hires that have been prevalent over the past three years, this new strategy provides a sustainable solution to the staffing shortages in the rapidly expanding hospitality sector.
Interns, typically in their second or third year at well-known international hotel management schools, are proving to be beneficial for both hotels and aspiring professionals. These young talents bring enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn, making them ideal candidates for roles during high-occupancy periods.
In contrast to freelancers, who are usually hired on daily or hourly contracts with pay rates between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000 per month, interns receive comprehensive compensation packages. These packages often include work visas, health insurance, accommodation, transportation, and monthly stipends ranging from Dh1,000 to Dh2,000.
According to Jane Fernandes, Regional Director of Human Resources at United Hospitality Management, “The UAE’s reputation as a global hospitality hub attracts a diverse pool of students from Asia, Africa, and Europe. By integrating interns into our workforce, we address staffing gaps while fostering long-term talent development.”
The rapid growth of hotels across the UAE has created both opportunities and challenges in employee retention, as workers seek better compensation and benefits. Internships are emerging as a practical and cost-effective way to navigate these challenges while cultivating a future-ready workforce.
With the UAE’s hospitality sector showing no signs of slowing down, this shift toward internships could establish a new industry standard, providing young professionals with invaluable hands-on experience and paving the way for long-term career opportunities.
As the busy season approaches, all eyes are on how this strategy will influence service delivery and workforce dynamics in one of the world’s leading hospitality markets.
