The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority has issued a safety advisory to campers and desert-goers, warning them against consuming unknown plants while camping in the UAE’s desert regions. This is part of the authority’s efforts to ensure the health and safety of those venturing into the desert during the camping season.
While the desert expanse in the UAE may invite people to explore its vast stretches with unique flora, several plants throughout that territory are poisonous or cause allergic reactions. According to ADAFSA, “desert flora often bears a similarity in appearance to edible plants, resulting in poisoning when eaten.” Campers are instructed not to eat unknown plants unless one is positive about their edible status.
It highlighted the risks of plant-based poisoning that may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and even damage to the internal organs. It recommended that campers carry adequate provisions, such as water and food, and avoid foraging for unknown plants. They were also advised to stay informed about the local flora and fauna to know what was safe to interact with during their desert excursions.
In addition to the plant safety warnings, ADAFSA urged campers to adopt best practices in fire safety, waste disposal, and environmental conservation while appreciating the desert’s natural beauty. With the camping season in full swing, these guidelines aim to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone exploring the UAE’s wilderness.
