UAE Launches Digital Health Platform to Detect Lung Cancer in Smokers

UAE to launch digital health assessment platform targeting smokers. The Ministry announces a high-risk group and a national guide for the early detection of lung cancer.

Dubai: The UAE is set to launch a digital health assessment platform targeting smokers as part of a new initiative to enhance the early detection of lung cancer. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced that high-risk groups, particularly individuals aged 50 and older who are current or former smokers, will be targeted through this platform.

This initiative is part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to combat lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an estimated 1.8 million people died of lung cancer in 2020, accounting for 18% of all cancer deaths that year. Smoking is responsible for approximately 85% of all lung cancer cases, making it a critical area of focus for public health interventions.

The digital health assessment platform aims to provide accessible and timely screenings for high-risk individuals, leveraging technology to enhance the early detection and management of lung cancer. By identifying potential cases earlier, the platform hopes to improve treatment outcomes and reduce the overall mortality rate associated with this disease.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector at MoHAP, emphasized the importance of this initiative in promoting public health and preventing lung cancer. He highlighted the platform’s role in increasing awareness about the risks associated with smoking and encouraging individuals to undergo regular health assessments.

The national guide for the early detection of lung cancer will provide comprehensive guidelines for healthcare providers and the public, outlining the best practices for screening, diagnosis, and management of the disease. This guide is expected to play a crucial role in standardizing care and ensuring that high-risk individuals receive the necessary support and interventions.

In addition to the digital health assessment platform, the UAE government is also implementing various tobacco control measures to reduce smoking rates and exposure to environmental risk factors. These measures include public awareness campaigns, smoking cessation programs, and stricter regulations on tobacco products.

The launch of this platform and the accompanying national guide reflect the UAE’s commitment to improving public health and addressing the challenges posed by lung cancer. By focusing on early detection and prevention, the UAE aims to save lives and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

As the UAE continues to advance its healthcare initiatives, the digital health assessment platform represents a significant step forward in the fight against lung cancer. The integration of technology in healthcare is expected to transform the way diseases are detected and managed, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for the population.
