The UAE has announced the start of a polar research project to strengthen its position as a leader in polar studies. This was revealed during the plenary session of the UAE Government’s Annual Meetings 2024.

Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and Chair of the “UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee,” shared details about the project. It was developed over the past year through teamwork between the International Affairs Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, the National Centre of Meteorology, and Khalifa University.

The project includes insights from scientists, experts, and diplomats to identify important research priorities that focus on scientific, technological, and commercial uses. Initial steps involve setting up the “Polar Research Center” at Khalifa University, forming strategic international partnerships, signing necessary treaties, and participating in global polar missions.

Almheiri stated that these efforts highlight the UAE’s recognition of the significance and worldwide impact of polar science. She acknowledged the potential of polar regions and emphasized that the project aims to prepare Emirati scientists for roles in international polar missions.

Almheiri announced, “Two Emiratis will begin their Antarctic mission tomorrow, November 7,” adding that another mission is planned for the Arctic in the summer of 2025. This initiative extends the UAE’s scientific influence to both polar regions.

She explained that the UAE aims to be at the forefront of polar research to promote soft power, inspire future generations in science, build national scientific capacity, and support global climate action and environmental issues.

Regarding international treaties, she confirmed that the Cabinet has approved all necessary treaties related to polar research and activities. Almheiri also mentioned that the UAE has been invited to join the Antarctica InSync program and the 33rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition, while outlining Khalifa University’s upcoming polar research initiatives.
