At 17, Hamad Al Shehhi weighed 120 kilograms and struggled with basic exercises. Determined to make a change, he joined Base, Ras al Khaimah’s first martial arts academy. With guidance and support, he lost 20 kilograms in just six months. Training three times a week, he reached a healthy weight of 68 kilograms in 2.5 years.

Looking back, Al Shehhi said his lifestyle completely changed. “I used to stay up late playing video games, eating, and sleeping during the day. After joining the gym and starting martial arts, I developed discipline. Now, I’m in bed by midnight and wake up at 7 am to train,” he shared.

Building Discipline Through Martial Arts

Initially, Al Shehhi trained once a day, five days a week, and reduced his food intake. Over time, he progressed to three daily training sessions and focused on eating healthy, home-cooked meals. “Even when I travel, I find ways to stay active and eat meals rich in protein and nutrients,” he said.

This discipline also improved other areas of his life, including his spiritual practices and daily routine. “Before martial arts, I didn’t value commitment. Now, it’s a core part of my life, from fitness to prayers and habits. It’s given me structure and purpose,” Al Shehhi explained.

Becoming a Champion and Mentor

Now 21, Al Shehhi is a martial arts champion and coaches students at Base. “Joining Base gave me a life-changing sense of belonging,” he said. He credits Base founders Stoyan Krstov and Tiyana Zec for their encouragement.

In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Stoyan and Tiyana, both national martial arts champions, established Base. Inspired by Stoyan’s military background, the academy provides a disciplined and safe environment for kids and adults to train. Base has grown into a hub for martial arts enthusiasts, combining traditional values with modern fitness techniques.

Winning Awards and Inspiring Others

Al Shehhi began competing in 2022 and has since achieved notable success. He won 3rd place in the UAE Muay Thai Championship last year, along with two more awards for 3rd place in national kickboxing and Muay Thai championships this year. As an assistant coach at Base, he inspires younger students. “When kids tell me they want to be strong like me, it makes my day. It’s a small comment but means so much,” he said.

Supported by Stoyan and Tiyana, Al Shehhi is now pursuing tourism and hospitality studies in Serbia while working at Base. He balances his time between training, coaching, and studying.

Reflecting on his journey, he said, “My goal is not just to become a world champion but also to share my knowledge and inspire others. I want to teach everything I’ve learned.”

A Place to Grow

Base blends martial arts techniques like karate, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai with life skills training.

Programs include belt examinations to keep students motivated, fostering discipline, focus, and confidence. Beyond fitness, Base helps members improve academically and socially, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
