Two UAE companies are collaborating to develop the largest solar farm dedicated to cryptocurrency mining in the country, valued at up to $1 billion. The project, located in Abu Dhabi, aims to make cryptocurrency mining more sustainable and energy-efficient.

Abu Dhabi-based climate tech platform Gigatons is partnering with Dubai-based blockchain company Hearst to lay the groundwork for eco-friendly financial solutions. The announcement was made during the Bitcoin Mena conference in Abu Dhabi.

Project Details and Investment Goals

The first phase of the solar farm will have a capacity of 50 to 100 megawatts, with the larger output pushing the total investment up to $1 billion, according to Loic Ricci, COO of Hearst. Speaking at the event, Ricci stated that the companies will initially test the concept with a $10 million investment, where each megawatt is expected to generate returns worth “tens of millions of dollars.”

Ricci added, “We’ll start small with $10 million, then scale up to $100 million and beyond as the project progresses.”

Timeline and Construction Plans

The companies expect to finalize their partnership and secure regulatory approvals by the end of this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025. “The cryptocurrency market is highly dynamic, so we’re moving fast. Starting with just 1MW, we aim to expand and push industry boundaries,” Ricci said.

Addressing Cryptocurrency Mining Challenges

Cryptocurrency mining, including Bitcoin, requires significant energy due to the specialized hardware involved. Crypto.com reports that mining a single Bitcoin can consume about 155,000 kWh of electricity, while a single Bitcoin transaction uses approximately 851.77 kWh, equivalent to a month’s energy use in an average U.S. household.

Leveraging Solar Energy in the UAE

The UAE’s abundant solar resources will power this innovative venture. The country is already a leader in renewable energy with projects like Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Solar Park and Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park.

Heston Harper, CEO of Gigatons, emphasized the importance of this transition: “This is a transformative time for innovation. We aim to provide scalable, transparent solutions that integrate blockchain and AI, steering the world toward a net-zero future.”

This ambitious project not only highlights the UAE’s commitment to clean energy but also sets a new standard for sustainable cryptocurrency mining on a global scale.
