Virat Kohli faced a 20% fine on his match fee and received a demerit point following a confrontation with Australia’s Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day test in Melbourne, according to media reports.

The incident occurred when Kohli bumped shoulders with 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas. Both players turned toward each other, exchanged words, and the moment quickly escalated. Umpire Michael Gough and Khawaja had to step in to calm the situation.

Cricket is a Non-Contact Sport

As cricket is classified as a non-contact sport, specific rules prohibit physical nudging or bumping. The International Cricket Council (ICC) clearly states that “inappropriate physical contact” is not allowed. Offenders may face match suspensions for serious violations.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, commenting for the Seven Network, criticized Kohli’s actions, saying, “That man (Kohli) might have a few questions to answer.” Ponting firmly believed Kohli was at fault in the situation.
