What It’s Like to Live in Burj Khalifa During New Year’s Celebrations

As the world eagerly awaits the breathtaking Burj Khalifa New Year’s Eve fireworks, a few lucky residents enjoy the magic from a truly unique perspective.

Living in the tallest building on Earth offers residents an up-close view of the meticulous preparations that transform this architectural marvel into a symbol of celebration.

“The preparations start as early as November 30, when laser lamps for the light show are attached to the building,” shared Dr. Mina Jethu, a dentist originally from Amsterdam, in an interview.

She explained how the festive buzz continues throughout December: “I often notice Mission Impossible-style stunts as experts set up the fireworks framework. Watching the lamps move and flash different colors during the testing phase is amusing, even early in the morning.”

Mina also mentioned that residents receive detailed instructions about the New Year’s festivities. “We can reserve Burj Park tickets in advance, and there are clear guidelines about access and safety due to the fireworks setup. The staff is always there to help,” she added.

This year, Mina is heading to Suriname to celebrate with her family. “I’ve spent six incredible New Year’s Eves in the Burj Khalifa, but this year, I’m excited to explore my family roots in South America,” she said.

Though she won’t be in her apartment for the celebrations, Mina cherishes the privilege of living in such an iconic location. “It feels surreal to be part of this annual event. I’m grateful for these experiences and can’t wait to see the celebrations in videos.”

A Yearly Tradition

Indian expat Salim Moopen, who lives on the 47th floor, has been a Burj Khalifa resident for five years. He eagerly watches the preparations each December as the big day approaches.

“I’ve lived in many places across the UAE, but this will always be the best,” Salim shared. “My family and I gather in the area with mats to enjoy the fireworks together. It’s a yearly tradition I always look forward to.”

During this time, some facilities on the upper floors, like the gym and pool, are temporarily closed to accommodate the preparations, he noted.

The Burj Khalifa New Year’s Eve fireworks remain one of the most anticipated spectacles worldwide. While thousands tune in to live streams, experiencing the show in person is unmatched despite the crowds, road closures, and long waits.

Last year, Salim decided to enjoy the celebrations from the comfort of his apartment. “Surprisingly, we didn’t hear much sound,” he recalled, noting it was quieter than expected.

For residents and visitors alike, the Burj Khalifa New Year’s Eve fireworks are more than a display; they’re a symbol of celebration, hope, and joy as the world ushers in a new year.
