Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on iPhones with iOS versions older than 15.1. This includes older models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. If you’re using one of these devices, you won’t be able to access the app after this date.

Currently, WhatsApp supports Android phones running version 5.0 or newer and iPhones with iOS 12 or later. However, WhatsApp is updating its compatibility requirements to focus on newer technologies, leaving behind older systems.

What This Means for iPhone Users

If your iPhone can be updated to iOS 15.1 or newer, you can still use WhatsApp. Make sure to install the latest software updates by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update on your device.

If your device cannot upgrade to iOS 15.1 or higher, you’ll need to switch to a newer iPhone to continue using WhatsApp.

Why WhatsApp is Making This Change

WhatsApp aims to optimize the app’s performance and integrate the latest features in mobile technology. The company explained on its website:

“Discontinuing support for older devices allows us to focus on supporting newer systems and keeping up with advancements in technology.”

By phasing out older operating systems, WhatsApp can ensure better security, compatibility, and functionality for users with modern devices.

How to Prepare for the Update

WhatsApp will notify users on unsupported devices several times before the May 2025 deadline. If your iPhone is affected, you’ll either need to upgrade to a newer model or install the latest iOS version, if available.

For users with newer iPhones, updating to the latest iOS ensures uninterrupted access to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Compatibility Guidelines

Here’s an overview of devices supported by WhatsApp:

  • Android: Phones running version 5.0 or newer with the ability to receive SMS messages or calls.
  • iOS: iPhones running iOS 12 or newer, capable of receiving SMS messages or calls.

For iPhone users, WhatsApp recommends using the latest iOS version for the best experience. Avoid jailbroken or modified devices, as they may not support WhatsApp’s functionalities.

Final Note

Technology evolves rapidly, and WhatsApp regularly updates its supported devices to keep up with advancements. If you’re using an older iPhone, make sure to plan ahead before May 5, 2025, to avoid losing access to your WhatsApp account.
