Alpine F1 driver Pierre Gasly has admitted that he lay awake long after his bedtime to watch Rory McIlroy’s dramatic Masters win — and it was well worth it. Talking before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah, Gasly confessed he’s a massive golf fan and couldn’t help but watch the last few moments of McIlroy’s major victory.
The late-night watching came only days before Gasly takes the streets of Jeddah by storm for one of Formula 1’s fastest and most challenging circuits. “I don’t tend to stay up that late in race weeks, but Rory’s victory was special,” explained Gasly, adding that McIlroy’s pressure resistance was “inspiring.”
Gasly’s love for golf is not new — the French driver frequently posts driving range clips on his social media, and even played a few holes over the offseason. He joked that he may not be able to keep up with McIlroy’s swing, but he’ll attempt to bring that winning attitude onto the F1 circuit.
While Formula 1 heads towards another hotly contested clash in Saudi Arabia, fans wait with bated breath to find out if Gasly’s zeal materializes in terms of points. With a couple of enhancements to the Alpine car, the team is looking forward to a better performance this weekend.
