Forecasters warn of “half-boiling” July temperatures in cities. Saudi Arabia is on high alert this week as a severe heatwave sweeps across the Kingdom, with temperatures soaring close to 50°C (122°F) in several cities. Meteorologists have warned of “half-boiling conditions,” urging residents to take extreme precautions to stay safe.
Cities in the Danger Zone
Major urban centers including Riyadh, Dammam, Makkah, and Madinah are expected to bear the brunt of the extreme heat, with peak temperatures forecast to exceed 48°C. The Saudi National Center for Meteorology (NCM) has issued urgent alerts and advisories, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.
Limitations on Work and Health Measures
Authorities have reinforced midday work bans for laborers and advised businesses to reschedule outdoor activities. The Ministry of Health has cautioned against heatstroke and dehydration, recommending:
Staying indoors during peak hours (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.).
Wearing light, breathable clothing.
Drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeine.
Keeping vehicles ventilated and avoiding leaving children or pets inside.
Pilgrims and Tourists Urged to Stay Cool
With many visitors still in the Kingdom following Hajj season, additional cooling measures have been deployed at religious sites in Makkah and Madinah, including misting stations, shaded walkways, and cold water dispensers.
The Significance of It
A larger trend of rising summer temperatures throughout the Gulf, partly due to climate change, includes this heatwave. Longer and more severe heat waves may soon become the new normal in the area, according to experts.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe:
During this hot weather period, residents and visitors are advised to keep an eye on official weather updates and take all essential precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
